The County Mayor is the chief executive officer of the county, and has the powers and duties previously exercised by the county judge, except judicial functions. The County Mayor serves as a non-voting, ex-officio member of each committee of the legislative body. He/she also appoints members of the following boards: Planning Commission, which operates zoning and subdivision regulations outside Morristown, building inspectors, the Board of Zoning Appeals, and to the Emergency Communications District. The Finance Department is located within this office.

Under the Fair Housing Act, it is against the law to discriminate against any person because of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, or national origin related to housing activities. These activities include:
- The sale or rental of housing or residential lots
- Advertising the sale or rental of housing
- Financing of housing
- The provision of real estate brokerage services, and
- The appraisal of housing.
